Sliding/Elevation/Jam

Charlie puts his rear wheel over the edge at Tim's.

I'm leaving for Elevation in a few hours, so that oughta be good. BAaron is staying behind, but will be riding with our favorite non-NW mountain biker, JD Swanguen (red bike/black helmet/destroying.) At Solame no less.

The Helter Belter. The venue is sorted, we just need to get the date nailed. Sometime after I'm off crutches, which is will be August.

Japan Indoors

A short clip from TKC Productions who are carrying Tonic in Japan.
Rider is Hiroshi Watanabe and he rides for TKC and Black Market.

Some nice riding mixed with a few painful moments.

Broke in the NW

Chester Blacksmith. Badly broken leg.

Adam Perez. Broke his back at Solame. He had a section in Building The Underground.

Not sure if either rider had health insurance.

Add "Fakie" Andy (broken leg) and Rich Hirsh (separated shoulder) to the list.

Winners/Losers/Props

I liked Pierre's entry for his attention span, use of a second language, and confident conclusion. Nice job Pierre!

This is a very useful prop when sitting in my chair with my eyes closed, dreaming about floating through the most enormous set ever...

Ancient History.

BRAT Zine. Made this with my friend Miles. That's me on the cover. We didn't have access to much information or media about riding, so we sort of did it ourselves.

Probably my favorite page of BRAT.

Miles Peterken. I've tried finding him, but no luck.

Membership has it's privileges.

Some early 90's pool action. Yeah..those are OP shorts. Sometimes I wore sandals when I rode too..it's amazing I still have 10 toes.

Under Pressure.

A hydraulic press closed on Guy's hand at work, putting him in a cast for 8 weeks. He'll recover, but unfortunately won't be doing much more bike riding this summer. Send some kind words his way at Guy's Myspace.

Guy will be putting his downtime to good use, and don't be surprised when something amazing comes from this.

We'll be Guy Q&A here soon, so send some more questions in.

Ben Pritchards

Didn't know him, and learned of his death on FBM's site. Here are couple of his photographs for those who didn't know his work. These are truely among the best photos of people on bikes I've ever seen.

(Vice + Thieves) - Speed

Watched the Vice Travel Guide last week-end. Perfect for my Summer of Living Vicariously. Vice magazine is very much shot from the hip, and this movie feels the same way. Hey, who cares what my opinion is about some movie? See it for yourself.

Here's something else Vice related. This ad is funny, and not so safe. I also appreciate that it doesn't try and explain what "Adicolor" is. It's almost as if the people responsible for these short film ads also recognized that "Adicolor", while generous of budget, was light on anything which might sustain more than a glance.

Thanks for not filling my head with a gallon of strawberry flavored maple syrup "Adicolor". Whatever you are.

Thieves Prefer Tonic Fab in Reno.

Keep alert for suspicious Fall Guys:

"..my Fall Guy (S# FG-35) was stolen tonight in downtown Reno Nv, during a bicycle event. It was obvious that the thief wanted the bike, as my roommates fixie and his girlfriends roadbike were left untouched even though they were locked with the same lock. Even more impressive was the fact that he got through a U-lock to get it. Guess that it shows how desired your bikes are."

Isle of Mann TT
Another year of failing to attend the Isle of Mann TT has passed. Here are a few clips from the race. Someday the cards of budget and priority will fall in my favor and I can make this. Ride my bicycle around the island, have a pint of beer and watch the TT. What a dream...

Lunacy. Not quite as exciting as Tiger Woods 3 under par on the greens, but it'll do.

Wild.

Chuck Glasses

A cultural inquiry from Tonic Fab.
Erik Johnson sent this mind bending image of a man jumping through the windsheild of a car. This horror is reflected in the glasses of a an unflinching man? What does it all mean? What is this man..thinking?

Best response wins a Tonic Fab T-shirt.

All Time Low / High

I'm very excited about these sample bars. If like "Slams", you'll love these. We are calling them the All Time Lows and All Time Highs. Names inspired by..life?

As in life, good things come to those who wait. The Tonic Animal Testing Program will ensure the All Times are All Dialled.

Billy / Not Golf

You can make a whole lot more money sinking white balls into holes than you can riding a bike.

Oh well..nobody ever looked this good playing golf.

Greg-Sport

George French is one of the most intelligent and articulate people I've come across in the bike industry. Our friend Greg took French's proven Marmoset Hub and modified it for use on a suspension fork. The result is clean looking, lightweight and durable. Sweet.

Hip Replacement.

Greg , the fellow who radically modifed a Fall Guy last year sent a photo of another small (for him) project. Greg has modifed a Profile HIP stem so it can tighted from underneath, creating an exceptionally clean looking part. Wow.

At 37, and showing no signs of slowing down, Scott Matual. Scott's training for the BMX worlds in Victoria this year and we wish him the best of luck. Turn-Down at the trails on his race bike. Word.

Happy Trails,

Landon.

Guy, Clicked.

Man Power

Errol Morris is one my favorite directors. I visited his webiste the other day and discovered a series of ads he made for Miller a few years ago which are simply brilliant. Mayonaise, SUV's, and Hotdogs are all given careful consideration.

Failed to Protect Neck

The bike industry could use more FBM, and less CBS. If you are in the NY area this summer, go to this.

Todd / Trails / Tonic

"...here's a couple more pics from our trails in
b-ham. it's amazing that a tonic can make a 38 year old look like he almost
knows what he's doing. i love this bike."

Thanks Todd.

Tooling Up / Tooling Around

Pretty mild week-end. Tooling is taking shape at the Tonic Fab Lab, some riding at Glenhaven and a surpising visit to a friends' about-to-open cafe, Jace Gace. Jace Gace ("Yah-Say Gah-Say") is officially opening this Thursday, so if you are around PDX go a few blocks up 20th and Belmont for some chicken, waffles, beer and art.

Tony in action.
A fixture for cutting and checking Howie seatstays.
What's this?
A beautiful tool for ensuring vent-holes are straight. We use some big vent holes on the Howie, which makes alignment critical.
Charlie footplants over a crowd at the park.
Tony carves along....
....what Charlie jumps.
Charlie's student ID. Kinda reminds me of this.

Charlie / Crate

Friday, June 01, 2007

Saltos Escondidos 3.

A few admitted bad photos (I'm still learning!) from last week-end's "Hidden Jumps" tour.
Guy flows over a real 30 footer like it's nothing.
Pedro. Teaches piano, and has more pop than you can imagine.
Guy 3's while Charlie worships/barks at the moon/does Yoga.
Charlie at Dart. One of my "better" photos.
Guy and Pedro clear a path through the trees.
Charlie steps it up, and over. This is a very large jump..photos are not doing this monster justice.
Between work and school Billy's not been riding a lot. Who would have guessed with a move like this?
Billy again, 270 over the hip.

I can't wait for the next Tonic Tour.
